I went back 12 pages and didn't see the book thread, so I'm starting another one.
I just finished reading Deepsix by Jack McDevitt after earlier reading The Engines of God also by McDevitt. He's a science fiction writer that includes xenoarcheology which I think it pretty neat. His writing raises questions about creators and Creators without really giving a singular answer so I think that's pretty neat.
Finally, I picked up a copy of The Road this weekend so I'll be able to read that and mark it off the list.

cool. I'm reading 'matter' which is the third or fourth book in a series [that isn't quite a series] called 'culture' by ian m. banks. I skipped one of them, but so far all the stories are basically stand alone, save they are in the same 'universe.' cutlure is a society with no rules and no money. they can alter their bodies in a virtually infinite variety of ways which are all reversible... there are computer minds which run ships and stuff, but all intelligent life- artificial or organic- are afforded the same citizenship rights. they basically just hang out, but there is a branch of culture called contact and a branch of contact called special circumstances with which culture attempts to subtly manipulate violent primitive societies around the universe to be more of a mind with them. no overt meddling.
and there's lot's of alien sex.

The two books I named by McDevitt are loosely from a series as well, but if you pick up Deepsix without having read The Engines of God you'd be fine. As I understand it, there is a later book in the series (which I'll be looking for next time I'm at Borders/B&N/Books-a-million/Library) that has a more direct connection to The Engines of God.
If there's alien sex, then I've got to check out the Culture series.

Currently reading Dragon Factory, by Jonathan Maberry and it's prequel, Patient Zero. They're both pretty good thrillers with a sci-fi/genetic engineering twist. A good dose of science, too.
Still working through God and His Demons by Michael Parenti.
Picked up a used copy of Failed States by Noam Chomsky for a couple bucks at a great used bookstore by me.
In my reading queue:
Divine Misfortune by A. Lee Martinez Horns by Joe Hill The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi WWW: Wake and WWW: Watch by Robert J. Sawyer
China Mieville has a new book out in June called Kraken. i'm trying to get my hands on an advance copy.

Now, as you read that, picture me all glowy and ephemeral.

I've read that it's supposed to be good. I almost bought it yesterday instead of The Road but, oh well. I'll be waiting for your comments.

Isn't there a movie based on that book coming out soon? The book sounds good but the movie sounds boring as crap. I just started American Gods by Neil Gaiman, good so far.

The Swedish version has been done and is supposed to be a very good movie. I think it's on video. But, being American, Hollywood is doing it again, I think with more explosions and less nudity and smoking (not actually sure about the explosions, nudity and smoking part).
