Thanks for the map quiz reference, Found! I have it bookmarked and am working my way through the different maps.
I'm a techno-nerd by background and training, but I used to give intelligence briefings on occasion. Not only did I have to learn the places, I had to learn how to pronounce all of the nations and cities correctly. I still wince when I hear a Talking Head on the evening news mispronounce names. Of course, I know the "hot spots" of the world well, but completely tank trying to figure out the places where nobody has bothered to have a war lately. I need some remedial training.
Back when the Soviet Union broke apart, Yugoslavia and Czechslovakia were fragmenting, and half the other countries were changing their official spelling, I saw a cartoon I loved. It looked like a war room with a group of people hovering around a world map frantically moving stuff. The caption read: Situation Room at Rand-McNally ;D

So am I! lol. I minored in geography/geology in college and I made it my mission a few years ago to relearn all the countries and their capitals. So I made lots of copies of blank maps and proceeded to fill them in until I got all of them correct. And I also would just sit down and write out the countries by list, too. This includes all the island nations in Oceania and the Caribbean. Sadly, after taking some of those quizzes you linked to, i realize that I am once again out of touch with some of that knowledge. So round 2 is on!!! lmao. I am so glad to hear I'm not the only one who's like this!!!! ::hugs Smaug::

I, too, find myself only paying attention to where the news covers the latest conflicts and so my knowledge has laxed in lots of other areas. There is still at least enough of that info floating around in my brain so that when there is a news report on some place, I know generally where it is.

Other than the mispronunciations on the news, I get annoyed when they speak "American news English" in general, but then change to a Hispanic accent to say something like "May-hee-co" or "Pwear-toe Vai-jar-tuh"

Serially, mink, that is like my greatest annoyance with newspeople on tv. They seem to only do it for names and places of latino origin. Why not be consistent and do it for other countries, too? I'd like to hear them pronounce russian places the way they are supposed to sound. lol.
